Is Puerto Morelos in Cancún?
No. Puerto Morelos is its own town and municipality, between Cancún and Playa del Carmen on highway 307, about 20 minutes south of Cancún airport. Many resorts along that stretch use a Puerto Morelos address, but the town itself is the small grid of streets by the sea, east of the highway.
Is it worth visiting?
If you want a quiet beach town, yes. A low-key town: a walkable center, a beach right there, the reef offshore for snorkeling, the leaning lighthouse, and the cenotes route a few minutes inland. It's the kind of place people come back to.
If you want big nightlife, Cancún and Playa del Carmen are close enough for a night out.
Is it a good day trip from Cancún or Playa?
Yes. It's an easy drive from either. Spend the morning on the beach or snorkeling, the afternoon at a cenote, and finish with a burger before you head back.
What about safety and seaweed?
Like anywhere you travel, use common sense and check your government's current travel advice before you go. Sargassum seaweed on the Caribbean coast varies by season and by week, so check recent beach reports close to your dates.
Where to eat
Seafood places line the beach, and in town you'll find tacos, Italian and more. If you want a burger, we've been on Av. Javier Rojo Gómez since 2020, open every day from 12 to 9 PM, with outside seating.
